NUART FESTIVAL 2013 LINE UP JUST ANNOUNCED...

It gives us great pleasure to announce this years Nuart Festival line up, our most international list of artists yet. 16 artists from 11 countries spanning 4 continents are set to descend on Stavanger, a small town on the West Coast of Norway. Most of the names you will have probably already heard of. From the legendary MARTHA COOPER (US), invited as an artist in her own right and good friend AIKO (JP), enjoying a hugely successful post Faile career, to previous Nuart guests such as DAVID CHOE (US), ROA (BE), VHILS (PT) and M-CITY (PL). First time visitors to the festival include some of the worlds hottest names, artists who over the past couple of years have made a huge impact on the development of street art and who have successfully transitioned from street to gallery and contemporary art museums. South Africa’s FAITH47 and partner in crime DAL EAST (CN) will be joined by Lithuanian born, Malaysian based ERNEST ZACHAREVIC ,who’s groundbreaking interactive mural work last year on the streets of Penang took the internet by storm. The UK’s HUSH continues the Asian link, though in form rather than geography, whilst Parisian based stencil artist c215, already represented on the streets of Oslo, makes a long overdue visit to the west coast. Our very own DOTMASTER (UK), known as much for his production and sometimes curation of Nuart, also makes a welcome return as an artist in his own right. 2013 also sees Nuart delving further into Norway’s scene and history with emerging international stencil artists MARTIN WHATSON, Berlin based STRØK (who graces our posters and profile this year) and DOT DOT DOT, all names we’re sure you’ll be hearing more of over the coming months and years, if not already.

SHEPARD FAIREY SHOCKED BY ZIMMERMAN VERDICT...

I'm devastated by the Zimmerman verdict of not guilty in his shooting of unarmed Trayvon Martin. Self-defense is not a suitable legal defense when Zimmerman aggressively stalked and instigated a confrontation with Martin. What if the clash had lead to Zimmerman's death… would the jury have come to the same verdict? Zimmerman was an unnecessary aggressor and created a situation that never needed to happen. Zimmerman should have been found guilty of manslaughter because it is very difficult to prove the malice required for a murder verdict. There need to be consequences for instigating a confrontation with, and then killing, an unarmed teenager. Justice was not done in this case. Please use whatever outlets you have to voice your opinion if you feel the trial result was unjust.

PARIS INVADED...

LES BAINS RESIDENCY: A PHOTO SHOW AT MAGDA DANYSZ GALLERY...

This photography exhibition, Stéphane BISSEUIL and Jérôme COTON, traces the ephemeral artistic residency of Les Bains and shows the works created by 50 artists. From January to April 2013, artists invaded the 3000 m² of this legendary building dating from 1885. Stéphane BISSEUIL and Jérôme COTON were the only photographers to be allowed to enter this venue and join the crazy adventure. Today they present the photos they took each day during this period, as a visual memory of these ephemeral works in situ.

The adventure begun when the owner Jean-Pierre Marois invited Magda Danysz to be the curator of this crazy project. With four generations of urban artists, from Jacques Villéglé (in his 80s) or Gerard Zlotykamien (in his 70s), to VHILS (in his 20s), the artists were offered to take over the space freely and without any limits. Each artist made a final tribute to this “nightlife temple” and to this impressive Haussmannian building.  Everyone found their individual source of inspiration and worked in situ. In this exhibition, photographs by Stéphane BISSEUIL and Jerome COTON trace all these achievements – from young talents such as L’ATLAS, STEN LEX, SAMBRE, WXYZ recognized on the street-art scene to more established artists as MOSKO ET ASSOCIES, JEF AEROSOL, as well as the first generation of Parisian graffiti artists - JAYONE, SKKI and ASH.

This exhibition, organised by the gallerie Magda Danysz, Jean-Pierre Marois and Colombe de La Taille (ADL Conseil), shares the memories of this ephemeral art project through exclusive photos (the whole space was closed during the artistic residency). These photos are both powerful and impressive but also marked with nostalgia. The level of creativity seen here is unique and evokes the artistic performance specific to this original residency in Les Bains.
